How to choose a moonstone crystal
Moonstone is best known for its floating glow, which can appear to move beneath the surface as the viewing angle changes. This optical effect gives each polished stone and piece of jewellery a different appearance.
Moonstone may be white, cream, grey, peach or nearly colourless. Some pieces display a broad glow, while others show a smaller flash visible only from a particular direction.

What creates moonstone’s glow?
Moonstone belongs to the feldspar mineral group. Its characteristic glow, known as adularescence, is created when light scatters between fine internal layers within the stone.

A moonstone does not need to have a strong blue flash to be moonstone. Some pieces are valued for their cream, peach or grey colour and a more understated glow.

Several materials with similar luminous appearances may be sold under related names, but they are not identical.
Traditional moonstone is a feldspar known for adularescence. Its glow is commonly white, silvery or blue.
Rainbow moonstone is a trade name generally used for a light-coloured variety of labradorite. It can display blue, green, yellow or multicoloured flashes.
Opalite is manufactured glass with a blue and orange glow. It is not a variety of moonstone or another naturally formed mineral.

Moonstone durability and care
Moonstone measures approximately 6–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Its cleavage gives it relatively low resistance to hard impacts.
