What is clear quartz?

Clear quartz is the colourless and transparent variety of quartz. Particularly transparent specimens are traditionally called rock crystal.

Quartz is composed of silicon dioxide, with the chemical formula SiO2. The same mineral family includes amethyst, smoky quartz, citrine and several forms of rose quartz. Their different colours are caused by trace elements, structural defects, irradiation or microscopic inclusions.

Clear quartz does not contain a strong colour-producing component. Light can therefore travel through a transparent specimen without being absorbed in the same way as it is in coloured quartz.

Is clear quartz chemically pure?

Clear quartz is sometimes described as “pure quartz,” but visual clarity does not necessarily mean that a crystal is chemically or structurally perfect.

Even a very transparent specimen may contain small amounts of aluminium, iron, lithium, hydrogen or other trace elements. It may also contain microscopic fluid inclusions, growth features, internal fractures or tiny mineral particles that are difficult to see without magnification.

How does clear quartz form?

Quartz also occurs in pegmatites, volcanic cavities, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks. Because quartz is resistant to weathering, quartz grains are common in sand and many sedimentary deposits.

Clear quartz hardness

Clear quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. This makes it resistant to everyday scratching and suitable for many types of jewellery, carvings and polished objects.

The Mohs scale compares the relative scratch resistance of minerals. For comparison:

  • a fingernail has a hardness of approximately 2.5
  • ordinary steel is approximately 5–6
  • quartz has a hardness of 7
  • diamond has a hardness of 10

Hardness does not mean that a crystal cannot break. Quartz is hard but brittle, which means it resists scratches more effectively than it resists sharp impacts.

Cleavage, fracture and durability

Quartz has poor or indistinct cleavage. It does not normally split easily along broad, predictable planes in the way that minerals with strong cleavage do.

When quartz breaks, it commonly develops a conchoidal fracture. This creates curved surfaces similar to those seen in broken glass. Freshly broken edges can be very sharp.

Internal fractures may produce small rainbow-like flashes as light reflects from the fracture surfaces. These rainbows are optical effects rather than separate colours within the quartz.

Natural clear quartz can contain a wide range of inclusions. These internal features may record stages of crystal growth and reveal information about the geological environment in which the quartz formed.

What is phantom quartz?

Phantom quartz contains the visible outline of an earlier stage of crystal growth. The original crystal surface may have been covered by chlorite, iron minerals or another material before quartz growth resumed.

The result is a crystal-shaped form suspended inside the later quartz growth. Several outlines may occur within the same specimen, producing layered or repeated phantoms.

What is double-terminated quartz?

Most quartz crystals grow from a rock surface and develop a visible termination at only one end. A double-terminated crystal has naturally formed points at both ends.

These crystals can develop when they grow freely inside a cavity or within material that allows space around the entire crystal. The double termination is a growth form rather than a separate mineral variety.

Piezoelectric properties of quartz

Quartz is piezoelectric. When controlled mechanical pressure is applied to a properly oriented quartz crystal, an electrical charge can develop across it. Conversely, an electric field can cause carefully cut quartz to vibrate at a stable frequency.

This physical property has made quartz important in watches, clocks, oscillators, sensors, communication equipment and other electronic applications.

Piezoelectricity is a measurable material property, but it should not be confused with spiritual claims about crystal energy. A quartz ornament sitting on a shelf does not generate a scientifically established health effect.

Where is clear quartz found?

Quartz is one of the most widespread minerals in Earth’s crust. Clear quartz occurs in many countries, although the appearance and size of crystals vary between deposits.

Origin usually cannot be confirmed from appearance alone. Reliable provenance depends on documentation from the supplier, mine or collector.

Can the colour of clear quartz change?

Colourless quartz is generally stable in normal indoor conditions. It does not normally fade in the same way that certain coloured quartz varieties can.

However, intense heat, sudden temperature changes or artificial treatment can affect quartz. Irradiation can create smoky colour in quartz with suitable structural and chemical characteristics.

Heating may lighten some smoky quartz or alter the colours of other quartz varieties. These processes are used commercially, but the exact result depends on the original material.

Glass is one of the most common materials used to imitate clear quartz. Both materials can be transparent and colourless, making polished pieces difficult to identify by appearance alone.

Possible indicators of glass include round gas bubbles, mould marks and flowing internal structures. However, the absence of bubbles does not prove that an object is quartz, and natural quartz can contain rounded fluid inclusions.

Home scratch tests are not recommended for valuable objects. They may damage the item and rarely provide enough information for a secure identification.
