How to choose an obsidian stone
Obsidian is recognised by its glassy surface and deep colour. Classic black obsidian can look almost completely opaque, while thinner edges may appear slightly translucent when held towards a strong light.
Other varieties contain pale patterns, reddish-brown areas or subtle bands of reflected colour. Choose according to the variety, finish and individual appearance that appeal to you.
What is obsidian?
Obsidian is volcanic glass rather than a crystalline mineral. It forms when silica-rich lava cools so quickly that crystals do not have time to develop.
Its composition and glass-like structure give obsidian a smooth, reflective appearance. When broken, it forms curved surfaces and potentially extremely sharp edges.
Obsidian has been used historically for cutting tools, arrowheads, decorative objects and jewellery. Modern polished pieces retain the dark colour and shine while removing the sharpest raw edges.
Different varieties of obsidian
Obsidian occurs in several recognisable varieties. Each has a different appearance, although all share the same volcanic origin.
Black obsidian
Black obsidian is the classic and most familiar variety. It has a deep black, glassy appearance and may look slightly translucent around thin edges.

Snowflake obsidian
Snowflake obsidian contains pale grey or white patterns against a black background. These “snowflakes” are clusters of cristobalite that formed within the volcanic glass.

Rainbow obsidian
Rainbow obsidian can reveal subtle bands of green, violet, gold or other colours under bright directional light. The effect may not be visible from every angle.
When choosing rainbow obsidian, review photographs taken from several directions and under different lighting. Its colour is often more understated than the name suggests.
Mahogany obsidian
Mahogany obsidian combines black with warm reddish-brown or mahogany-coloured areas. The patterns may appear as patches, flowing lines or broad sections of colour.
It offers a warmer alternative to completely black obsidian and is traditionally associated with grounding, confidence and stability.
Raw obsidian, polished stones or jewellery?
Raw obsidian shows more of its original volcanic-glass structure. Broken surfaces can be exceptionally sharp and should never be handled like an ordinary rounded stone.
Polished obsidian has a smooth surface that highlights its colour and reflective finish. Smaller polished pieces are suitable for carrying in a protective pouch, while spheres, towers and carvings work well as decorative objects.
Obsidian jewellery offers a dark, versatile appearance. Bracelets, pendants and earrings can be worn with many colours and styles.
When choosing obsidian, consider:
- which variety and pattern appeal to you
- whether you prefer a raw or polished finish
- whether the stone will be displayed, carried or worn

The traditional meaning of obsidian
In crystal traditions, obsidian is associated with grounding, protection and honest self-reflection. It is often chosen as a symbolic reminder to maintain personal boundaries and approach difficult situations clearly.
Some people place obsidian near an entrance or workspace. Others carry a polished stone or wear it as jewellery. It can also be selected purely for its volcanic origin and reflective appearance.

Polished obsidian can be an approachable first stone because it is easy to recognise and available in many forms. A rounded piece or item of jewellery is more practical for beginners than a freshly broken raw specimen.
Raw obsidian requires careful handling because fractured edges can be sharp enough to cut skin. It should not be given to children or carried loose in a pocket or bag.

Obsidian durability and care
Obsidian measures approximately 5–5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. It can scratch, chip and break when dropped, and broken surfaces may form razor-sharp edges.
For safe care:
- handle raw obsidian carefully
- never run your fingers along a broken edge
- wipe polished pieces with a clean, soft cloth
- use lukewarm water and mild soap when necessary
- avoid abrasive cleaners and rough brushes
- protect pieces from drops and hard impacts
- store jewellery separately to reduce scratches
- keep sharp or damaged pieces away from children and pets
If a polished piece chips and develops a sharp edge, stop carrying or wearing it.
